USC graduates' interaction with high school Geography students

From: SRC Winter Newsletter 2016

Upon invitation by Sally Vellar, Geography Head of Department at Coolum High School, Matthew Brown, Eric Lede and Renee Currenti guest lectured in the Year 12 Geography class. During the session, students were told about each of their current and upcoming research projects, how they became involved in the research, and what is in store for their future.

A workshop held at the end of the session gave the students an opportunity for group interaction with questions relating to research, sustainability, geography and life at USC, being the main topics of discussion.

Following this, Matthew was invited to facilitate an upcoming fieldtrip with the Year 11 geography class as their current unit is focussed on river systems. Matthew and Renee led the field trip as they visited the Bli Bli Wetlands and another developed location to compare the differences in the surrounding environment with focus on mangrove ecosystems.

Since their fieldtrip, they have been invited back to Coolum High to attend one of their classes to answer any questions relating to their experience and to continue facilitating their learning experience regarding the mangroves and the Maroochy River system.
